Why study Genres

  1. To impart a deep understanding of music in multiple forms
  2. To inspire students to appreciate all kinds of music
  3. To increase musical creativity and innovation
  4. To aid in creative songwriting

Music Style is different from Music Form

Music StyleSong Form
Combination of the different elements of music to form a unique style of music.Musical Composition or Arrangement of the different parts of a song.

  3. Religious Music
  4. Secular Music

Art Music

  1. Mostly Classical Pieces (be it contemporary or traditional)
  2. Mostly written (as opposed to oral transmission or recording)
  3. Often associated with the composer rather than the performer
  4. Defined by the notated version rather than a particular performance
  5. Mostly classified as for the elite or learned

Popular Music

  1. Any music style accessible to the general public and disseminated by mass media (radio, tv)
  2. Often cuts across social cultural borders
  3. Store and distributed in non-written form
  4. It is more of a commodity and must sell as much as possible.
  5. Involves performers, composers and producers
