Background:
African American version of Rhythm and Blues, after R&B gained more popularity amongst white folk and transformed into Rock n Roll
Developments:
Soul was a return to African American roots in Gospel and Blues, where Gospel was secularised by artists like Aretha Franklin.
Characteristics:
Direct emotional delivery, ethnic pride, displayed in shouts went on to affect other genres such as hip-pop
