Origin: Deep South of the United States of America

Year: Originated in the 1860s

How it begun: Started as Acapella or Vocal Music

Structure: Essentially a vocal form using AAB structure.

Lyrics: They are more lyrical rather than narrative; expressing feelings rather than telling stories

Feel: Emotions are generally one of sadness

Technique: To express melancholy musically, performers use vocal techniques such as melisma

Technique: Other techniques include rhythmic techniques such as syncopation and instrumental techniques such as “choking” or bending guitar strings

Instruments: Electric guitar, bass, drums, piano, harmonica, electric organs, saxophone
