What is Music?

Def 1: Music is vocal or instrumental sounds (or both) combined in such a way as to
produce beauty of form, harmony, and expression of emotion

Def 2: Music is an art of sound in time that expresses ideas and emotions in significan
forms through the elements of rhythm, melody, harmony, and color

Def 3: Music is a form of entertainment that puts sounds together in a way that people
like, find interesting or dance to

Elements of Music

The common elements of music are pitch (which governs melody and harmony), rhythm
(and its associated concepts tempo, meter, and articulation), dynamics (loudness an
softness), and the sonic qualities of timbre and texture (which are sometimes termed the
“color” of a musical sound)

Music is spontaneous and part of everyday life, and in the bible there are many stated
instances that music was employed for various reasons.

Ministry

Def. 1:
The work or vocation of a minister of religion.

Def 2:
The spiritual work or service of any Christian or a group of Christians for the benefit of the Kingdom of God.

Ministry is the work of a minister. There are different kinds of ministry within the Kingdom
of God; e.g. The Teaching Ministry also called the ministry of the Word.

Acts 6:4
4 But we will give ourselves continually to prayer, and to the ministry of the word.

Principles of Ministry

  1. It is received from God and must be fulfilled. Ministers are held accountable
    2 Corinthians 4:1
    1 Therefore seeing we have this ministry, as we have received mercy, we faint not;
    Acts 20:24
24 But none of these things move me, neither count I my life dear unto myself, so that I might
finish my course with joy, and the ministry, which I have received of the Lord Jesus, to testify the
gospel of the grace of God.
    Colossians 4:17
17 And say to Archippus, Take heed to the ministry which thou hast received in the Lord, that thou
    fulfil it.
  2. The Purpose of Calling of Gifts are for Ministry
    Ephesians 4:11-12
11 And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some,
    pastors and teachers;
12 For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body
    of Christ:
  3. Ministry Requires faithfulness
    1 Timothy 1:12
12 And I thank Christ Jesus our Lord, who hath enabled me, for that he counted me
    faithful, putting me into the ministry;
  4. Ministry must be proven over time
    2 Timothy 4:5
But watch thou in all things, endure afflictions, do the work of an evangelist,
make full proof of thy ministry.

Benefits of Ministry

1 Corinthians 3:8
8 Now he that planteth and he that watereth are one: and every man shall receive his own reward according to his own labour.

  1. Spiritual Growth

2 Every branch in me that beareth not fruit he taketh away: and every branch that beareth fruit, he purgeth it, that it may bring forth more fruit.

2. The 100 Fold Blessing

Matthew 19:29
29 And every one that hath forsaken houses, or brethren, or sisters, or father, or mother, or wife, or children, or lands, for my name’s sake, shall receive an hundredfold, and shall inherit everlasting life.

3. Divine Nourishment and Health

Exodus 23:25
25 And ye shall serve the Lord your God, and he shall bless thy bread, and thy water; and I will take sickness away from the midst of thee.

I will send my fear before thee, and will destroy all the people to whom thou shalt come, and I will make all thine enemies turn their backs unto thee.

7. Dominion (Take Over)

Exodus 23:28-30
And I will send hornets before thee, which shall drive out the Hivite, the Canaanite, and the Hittite, from before thee.
29 I will not drive them out from before thee in one year; lest the land become desolate, and the beast of the field multiply against thee.
30 By little and little I will drive them out from before thee, until thou be increased, and inherit the land.

8. Unlimited Provision

Deut 11:14,15
14 That I will give you the rain of your land in his due season, the first rain and the latter rain, that thou mayest gather in thy corn, and thy wine, and thine oil.
15 And I will send grass in thy fields for thy cattle, that thou mayest eat and be full.

Enemies to Ministry

  1. Bondage

Exodus 8:1
And the Lord spake unto Moses, Go unto Pharaoh, and say unto him, Thus saith the Lord, Let my people go, that they may serve me.

  1. Serving Other gods

Exodus 23:33 They shall not dwell in thy land, lest they make thee sin against me: for if thou serve their gods, it will surely be a snare unto thee.

  1. Wrong Company

 Focus Scripture – 1 Sam 16

17 And Saul said unto his servants, Provide me now a man that can play well, and bring him to me.

18 Then answered one of the servants, and said, Behold, I have seen a son of Jesse the Beth–lehemite, that is cunning in playing, and a mighty valiant man, and a man of war, and prudent in matters, and a comely person, and the Lord is with him.

19 Wherefore Saul sent messengers unto Jesse, and said, Send me David thy son, which is with the sheep.

20 And Jesse took an ass laden with bread, and a bottle of wine, and a kid, and sent them by David his son unto Saul.

21 And David came to Saul, and stood before him: and he loved him greatly; and he became his armourbearer.

 Focus Scripture – 2 Sam 2

11 Then David took hold on his clothes, and rent them; and likewise all the men that were with him:

12 And they mourned, and wept, and fasted until even, for Saul, and for Jonathan his son, and for the people of the Lord, and for the house of Israel; because they were fallen by the sword.

14 And David said unto him, How wast thou not afraid to stretch forth thine hand to destroy the Lord’s anointed?Stand in Humility; not Pride and arrogance

Posture

The right posture allows a singer to maximise the intake and release of air. The least posture correction can give tremendous results.

Proper posture is not only essential to improving the sound of a singer’s voice, but it enhances the efficiency of their breathing as well.

The way someone stands when they sing can impact what type of breathing is possible. For instance, taking a deep breath can be a challenge while standing hunched over.

Optimized posture, though, will keep the chest high, which in turn allows for more comfortable breaths from the diaphragm during singing.

The key is to keep the chest high, let the rib cage expand, and breathe slowly.

Benefits of Right Posture

  • Longer Breaths – Maximizes the intake and release of air by creating the most possible space in the chest cavity for the lungs to expand. This extra room means a singer can hold notes for longer.
  • Well-controlled sound – Aligns your vocal parts well to channel breath out of your body without tension giving you more control of the sound you’ll end up producing.
  • Improved posture can release tension and improve airflow through the vocal cords, which allows singers to execute phrasing even when their chest feels like it is about to collapse.
  • Posture helps with the end of phrasing as well.

Note – The least posture correction can give tremendous results E.g. Try to sing while standing and repeat while hunched over. Compare the two sounds

Consequences of Wrong Posture

  • Vocal or physical injury.
  • Bad vocal phrasing due to shortened breaths

Pointers to Good Posture

So, what does it look like to have good posture? Here are a couple of pointers

  • Feet should be shoulder-width apart with your weight tilted slightly forward.
  • Shoulders should be back and pushed down; never raised.
  • Joints should be flexible. For instance, you should be able to bend your knees and roll your head comfortably.
  • Chin parallel to the ground.
  • Chest held up in an elevated position.

Ending Notes

  • The right posture is necessary not only for Vocal Health, but for general Well-being.
  • It is also an important tool for Public Speaking.
  • Remember to check your sleeping positions and sitting positions as well, particularly for singers who’s jobs require long hours of sitting behind the computer etc.

The goal of this posture is to put your body at ease and maximize your singing ability. If you feel strained for any reason, you should not continue to hold the pose. For instance, if your chest is aching, rotate your shoulders inward to allow for a larger intake of air.

Similarly, you should not be too relaxed. Slumping forward can cut off possible airflow to your upper rib cage and constrict the lungs’ ability to expand. Slumping can also prevent your diaphragm from moving around at will.

I pray that the Holy Spirit would always remind you of these important notes.

God Bless you

Notes

Most people take short, shallow breaths into their chest. This can make you feel anxious and zap your energy.

This helps to correctly diagnose most cases where people seem to have timing issues with sow songs. Deep breathing is essential for long phrases.

With this technique, you’ll learn how to take bigger breaths, all the way into your belly.

Do well to go through the following exercise as often as you can, till you develop the right habit or technique of deep breathing for best singing output.

Exercise

  1. Get comfortable. You can lie on your back in bed or on the floor with a pillow under your head and knees. Or you can sit in a chair with your shoulders, head, and neck supported against the back of the chair.
  2. Breathe in through your nose. Let your belly fill with air.
  3. Breathe out through your nose.
  4. Place one hand on your belly. Place the other hand on your chest.
  5. As you breathe in, feel your belly rise. As you breathe out, feel your belly lower. The hand on your belly should move more than the one that’s on your chest.
  6. Take three more full, deep breaths. Breathe fully into your belly as it rises and falls with your breath.

Exam 1 (Theory)

Assignment 1 (Practical)

TOPICS IN THIS LESSON

  1. What Breathing is
  2.  Difference in Breathing when Singing
  3. Signs of Good Breathing
  4. Reasons for Breathing Right
  5. Intro to Breathing Exercises

LESSON SCRIPTURE

Genesis 2:7

And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.

No Breath, No Life… No Voice

What is Breathing

  • Breathing is the process of taking air into and expelling it from the lungs: his breathing was shallow.
  • When a person breathes normally, the inhalation and exhalation are relatively shallow.
  • Trying to breathe the same way you would when sitting at a desk or walking in the park does not work for singing.
Singing requires a concerted effort and more diverse breathing techniques.yea
  • Singing is the result of a process called phonation. During phonation, air passes through a person’s vocal folds (which somewhat look like the bristles of a brush) in the larynx, which causes them to vibrate.
  • Based on how the singer chooses to increase or decrease the tension in their vocal folds, and the amount of air passing through them, they can change the type of sound they produce.

Differences Between Regular Breathing and Singing Breathing

Singing Breathing

  1. The exhale is longer than the inhale and must be made with steady (even) exertion.
  2. The singer must also be aware of their breathing technique, as opposed to letting it flow involuntarily.
  3. We use up to 50 percent of our lung capacity

Regular Breathing

  1. Breaths are relatively shallow because our body exerts the minimum amount of effort possible.
  2. We only use about five to ten percent of our lung capacity during any given breath.

Signs of Good Breathing and Bad Breathing

Signs of Good Breathing

  1. Relaxed singing
  2. Comfortable Vibrato

Signs of Bad breathing

  1. Tensed singing
  2. Choking
  3. Unclear Vocal Notes

Right Breathing is Critical

Breathing could easily pass for the single most important element in singing. Below are important reasons to look at.

  1. Your breathing is what “fuels” your voice.
Without the proper amount of air passing through the vocal folds, a sound is not possible.
This makes breathing exercises critical to the success of any aspiring vocalist.
  2. Improving breathing technique allows a singer to have more control over shape, texture and tone of the voice.
Greater mastery enables the exploring of a broader range of notes and to hit those tones and semi-tones accurately.
  3. Right breathing sustains singing stamina
  4. Right Breathing builds the ability to execute advanced techniques like vibratos and tremolos and give you more control over the shape, texture, and tone
  5. It makes your body relaxed and pliable, even under the most challenging singing demands.

How you exhale affects many aspects of your singing, including the following:

  1. Sound Quality
  2. Volume
  3. Pitch
  4. Tone.

Causes of Poor Breathing in Singers

  1. Running out of breath
  2. Not utilizing diaphragm,
  3. Poor posture
  4. Not knowing at which cadence to inhale or exhale.

Breath Techniques & Exercises

There are different types of breath exercises which focus on different target areas of the body. The end is the same, however, as singers gain more control over their muscles when singing.

Preparing for Breath Exercises

  1. Choose a place to do your breathing exercise. E.g. Living room, bedroom etc.
  2. Wear comfortable clothes.
  3. Before we breath we must ensure that our shoulders and chest are relaxed while we exercise.

Basic Exercise

  • Inhale deeply in your diaphragm, so that belly button protrudes slightly (keep the air in belly not shoulders).
  • Ensure that your stomach feels hard and not tender (this shows that your diaphragm is in use)
  • Exhale slowly from the same place, so that your belly flattens out again. You can do this for 2 minutes.
  • Inhale the same way but when exhaling this time, allow the breath to escape slowly as you make a hissing sound with your mouth (like releasing air from a balloon) repeat this for a minute

Closing: The only way to make the best out of your breathing exercises is to do them regularly and consistently. In our next lesson, we will explore some other Breathing Exercises.
