GMOL19 – Christian Leadership

CHRISTIAN LEADERSHIP

A Christian leader is called to be a person of character before a person of position, meeting clear biblical requirements that protect God’s people and honor Christ.[1] The New Testament, especially 1 Timothy 3 and Titus 1, outlines key qualifications that shape how leaders live, love, and serve.

1. Above Reproach (Blameless)

  • “A bishop then must be blameless…” (1 Timothy 3:2 KJV).
  • “For a bishop must be blameless, as the steward of God” (Titus 1:7 KJV).

2. Faithful in Marriage / Sexual Purity

  • “The husband of one wife” (1 Timothy 3:2 KJV) speaks of faithfulness and moral purity.
  • “If any be blameless, the husband of one wife” (Titus 1:6 KJV).

3. Self‑Controlled and Disciplined

  • “Vigilant, sober, of good behaviour” (1 Timothy 3:2 KJV).
  • “…temperate, self‑controlled, sober” ideas are echoed in “not selfwilled, not soon angry… but… sober, just, holy, temperate” (Titus 1:7–8 KJV).

4. Respectable and Hospitable

  • “Of good behaviour, given to hospitality” (1 Timothy 3:2 KJV).
  • “A lover of hospitality, a lover of good men…” (Titus 1:8 KJV).

5. Able to Teach Sound Doctrine

  • “Apt to teach” (1 Timothy 3:2 KJV).
  • “Holding fast the faithful word as he hath been taught, that he may be able by sound doctrine both to exhort and to convince the gainsayers” (Titus 1:9 KJV).

6. Not Violent, Quarrelsome, or Harsh

  • “Not given to wine, no striker, not greedy of filthy lucre; but patient, not a brawler, not covetous” (1 Timothy 3:3 KJV).
  • “Not selfwilled, not soon angry, not given to wine, no striker, not given to filthy lucre” (Titus 1:7 KJV).

7. Free from the Love of Money

  • “Not greedy of filthy lucre” (1 Timothy 3:3, 8 KJV).
  • “Not given to filthy lucre” (Titus 1:7 KJV).

8. Good Manager of Home and Relationships

  • “One that ruleth well his own house, having his children in subjection with all gravity” (1 Timothy 3:4 KJV).
  • “Having faithful children not accused of riot or unruly” (Titus 1:6 KJV).

9. Spiritually Mature and Tested

  • “Not a novice, lest being lifted up with pride he fall into the condemnation of the devil” (1 Timothy 3:6 KJV).
  • “And let these also first be proved; then let them use the office…” (1 Timothy 3:10 KJV).

10. Good Reputation Inside and Outside

Leaders are called to be “ensamples to the flock” (1 Peter 5:3 KJV), modeling Christlike life before others.

“Moreover he must have a good report of them which are without; lest he fall into reproach and the snare of the devil” (1 Timothy 3:7 KJV).
