What is Backbiting

Malicious talk targeted at someone in the absence of the person.

Harmful talk with an intention to destroy the person.

Reasons why people backbite

  1. When rebuked by an authority
    Be careful not to backbit when rebuked by an authority
    Proverbs 9:9
    Give instruction to a wise man, and he will be yet wiser: teach a just man, and he will increase in learning.
  2. As a means to destroy an opponent, to win others to one’s side
    Another word for backbiting, is called defaming.
    Never defame others to look good.
  3. As a means to communicate one’s displeasure in an environment.
    Note:*
    Don’t destroy an environment before you leave there.
    If you’re not happy or satisfied, talk to the leadership.
    Leave a good legacy where ever you go.
    Don’t draw conclusions and pollute others with a backbiting tongue.

    Do not be controlling in an environment because everyone is in to serve.
  5. Product of an Inferiority Complex

Effects of Backbiting

  1. It causes anger and hatred amongst people
  2. Drives away the Presence of God
  3. It fights organizational growth

Psalm 15:1-3 KJV

[1] LORD, who shall abide in thy tabernacle? Who shall dwell in thy holy hill? [2] He that walketh uprightly, and worketh righteousness, and speaketh the truth in his heart. [3] He that backbiteth not with his tongue, nor doeth evil to his neighbour, Nor taketh up a reproach against his neighbour.

Prayer about Backbiting

  1. Ask God for forgiveness for anytime you have backbitten anyone or in any environment especially in the church
  2. Ask God to deliver you from any backbiting spirit
  3. Ask God for the spirit of wisdom
